Change of name and/or first name in the Republic of Moldova
Changing the name and/or first name is a process regulated by the legislation of the Republic of Moldova, which can only be done under certain conditions and with the observance of specific procedures. When can the name or surname be changed?
Changing the name and/or first name is allowed in the following cases:
- Pronunciation difficulties or dissonance : If the name or first name is difficult to pronounce or is distorted in translation.
- Nationality adjustment : If you want the name or surname to correspond to the nationality.
- Changing from a double name to a single surname .
- Desire to add spouse's surname : If this was not done at the time of marriage.
- Restitution of the maiden name : If this was not declared at the time of divorce.
- Real name different from the one on the birth certificate .
- Cases related to obtaining citizenship : For example, when the name in the foreign passport does not correspond to the one in the Moldovan documents.
When can the name and/or first name be changed?
Change is not allowed in the following cases:
- Selfish motive : For example, to avoid paying alimony or other illegal purposes.
- Astrological reason : Name changes for astrological reasons are not accepted.
- Change of name for legacies .
- Hard to pronounce or dissonant surnames .
- Persons with an unresolved criminal record .
The procedure for changing the name and surname

Application submission :
- The application is submitted in person or through a lawyer/consultant with power of attorney, at the territorial civil status office or at diplomatic/consular missions in the case of business residence.
- In case of urgent request, the request can be submitted by power of attorney, and the lawyer from Moldova will represent the applicant.

Examination of the application :
- The Civil Status Office will analyze the application and issue an opinion, and the Civil Status Service will approve or reject the application depending on the completeness of the file.

File approval :
- If the application is approved, a notice of change of name and surname will be issued, which must be officially registered.

Change registration :
- After the change is approved, the applicant must register the deed within one month. In case of non-appearance, the permit becomes invalid, but can be reinstated.
