Change of name and/or first name in the Republic of Moldova

Changing the name and/or first name is a process regulated by the legislation of the Republic of Moldova, which can only be done under certain conditions and with the observance of specific procedures. When can the name or surname be changed?

Changing the name and/or first name is allowed in the following cases:

The procedure for changing the name and surname

1. Application submission :

   • The application is submitted in person or through a lawyer/consultant with power of attorney, at the territorial civil status office or at diplomatic/consular missions in the case of business residence.
   • In case of urgent request, the request can be submitted by power of attorney, and the lawyer from Moldova will represent the applicant.

2. Examination of the application :

   • The Civil Status Office will analyze the application and issue an opinion, and the Civil Status Service will approve or reject the application depending on the completeness of the file.

3. File approval :

   • If the application is approved, a notice of change of name and surname will be issued, which must be officially registered.

4. Change registration :

   • After the change is approved, the applicant must register the deed within one month. In case of non-appearance, the permit becomes invalid, but can be reinstated.
