Obtaining the Romanian passport
The advantages of Romanian citizenship and the procedure for obtaining an international passport
One of the main advantages of Romanian citizenship is the freedom to travel without a visa to over a hundred countries. This mobility is essential in the current context, and in the 2022 global ranking of passports, Romania was in 17th place.
Features of the Romanian international passport
Romania issues biometric passports, called "simple electronic passports," for all citizens. The holder of this passport can travel freely in the European Union and in many other countries without a visa. The passport is issued for:
- 10 years for adults over 18,
- 5 years for those between 12-18 years old,
- 3 years for children under 12 years old.
There is also the option of a temporary passport, valid for 1 year, issued in cases of emergency or when time does not allow the issuance of a regular passport. It can also be obtained for children under 14, by proxy, without physical presence.
Why is a Romanian passport useful?
Holding a Romanian passport simplifies travel, allowing visa-free access to many countries. However, those who want to live and work in Romania also need an internal passport, called a Romanian bulletin, necessary for:
- legal employment and opening a business,
- changing the driver's license to a European one,
- accessing social programs,
- medical insurance.
For those who choose to initially obtain the international passport without applying for a bulletin, but later decide they want the domestic document, the application process will have to be repeated.
Documents required to obtain the Romanian passport
To apply, the following documents are required:
- Certificate of citizenship (original),
- Romanian birth certificate (original),
- Romanian marriage certificate (if applicable),
- The Moldovan or Romanian bulletin,
- Expired Moldovan/Romanian passport (if any),
- Proof of passport fee payment.
In the case of minors, the list includes the consent of the parents and their civil status documents. Foreign documents must be translated and legalized to be valid in Romania.
Romanian passport application procedure
Applying for a passport involves submitting the documents to the passport service in Romania or, for those from abroad, to the consulate. Appointments can be made on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania or on the epasaporte.ro platform, depending on the location.
Steps to get your passport
1. Online scheduling for submitting documents.
2. Paying the state tax and obtaining the payment receipt.
3. Presentation at the passport office with the package of documents.
4. Provision of biometric data (fingerprints).
5. Collecting the passport on the set date.
