Reacquisition of Romanian citizenship

Documents for Romanian citizenship
The originals of the documents required for the reacquisition of Romanian citizenship must be presented in person to the ANC in Romania.
Important! Laminated documents are not accepted in the file for repurchase. If you have a laminated document, you will need to request a certified duplicate with a blue seal that can be visually verified upon submission.

What documents must be provided in advance?
- foreign passport and bulletin;
- birth certificate;
- marriage certificate;
- parents' birth/marriage certificates;
- birth/marriage/death certificates of grandparents;
- birth/marriage/death certificates of great-grandparents.
If the kinship is through the grandparents, only their documents will be presented, without those of the great-grandparents. If the legal relationship is represented by the parents, only their documents will be provided.
If certain civil status documents, such as a birth, marriage or divorce certificate, are missing, they can be obtained in duplicate from the civil status office or through an authorized person with a power of attorney.

Important! According to art. 15^1 of the Romanian Citizenship Law no. 21/1991, republished, all documents in the file must be apostilled starting from 06.12.2021.
Where do I request the reacquisition of Romanian citizenship?
Applications can be submitted to the diplomatic missions or consulates of Romania in the applicant's country of residence, as well as to the National Agency for Citizenship (ANC) in Bucharest or to the territorial offices of the ANC in Iași.

Applicants (non-EU/EEA/Swiss nationals) must attach a plain copy of the passport page with visa or border post stamp for visa-required countries.
Citizens from other countries, with a residence permit issued by an EU/EEA/Switzerland state, must add a legalized copy of the residence permit.
